Fugitive death-row convict held in Narsingdi

Gazipur, June 20 – Police arrested a fugitive death-row convict of Gazipur from Narsingdi Sadarearly Wednesday.
The arrestee was identified as Abdul Samad, son of Kuddus Mia alias Elach Khude Newaz of Bahadursadi village in Kaliganj upazila. He was a death-row convict in the Billa Hossain alias Bilu murder case as well as wanted in several other cases, said Abu Bakar Mia, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.
Acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Samad around 3 am.
Later on Wednesday, he was sent to jail, said the OC.
On December 7, 1995, Billa Hossain alias Bilu was killed over stealing a bottle gourd at Ishwarpur Bazar in the upazila.
A case was filed against ten people. On October 5, 1997, police submitted the charge sheet accusing 13 people.
Recently, Gazipur Additional District and Session Judge Fazle Elahi sentenced 13 people to death in the case and fined Tk 10,000 each. Of the convict, six people including Samad tried in absentia. – UNB
