Government out to hurriedly convict Khaleda Zia: BNP

Dhaka – The BNP yesterday alleged that the government is trying to hurriedly finish the cases filed against party chairperson Khaleda Zia on corruption charges.
“Cases against Khaleda Zia are in progress. There is a move to complete the cases in an hasty manner,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the allegation while addressing a doa and milad mahfil as the chief guest at party’s Naya Paltan office after Zohr prayer. He called upon the party leaders and activists to strength of the party so that Khaleda Zia could remain in politics.
“We should not stay idle in homes; rather we should be getting united by strengthening the organisaiton so that we can remain in politics,” he said.
The BNP leader criticised the government not to sit on a dialogue to resolve the political stalemate despite what he said Khaleda Zia repeatedly called them to resolve the political impasse through talks.
The government did not come to a consensus as because they would be bound to give an election if they come to an agreement.
“They (Awami League candidates) will lose their security deposit if election is held in a free and fair manner. That’s why they cannot hear the call of the BNP,” he said.
He regretted that the government has taken the country’s politics to such a condition that space is not available for holding a milad mahfil, protest rally or public meeting.
“The entire country has been turned into a prison. A state cannot run like this,” he said.
The city BNP organised the function seeking the salvation of the departed soul of city BNP leader Aziz Ullah.
Presided over by standing committee member Mirza Abbas, the function was attended, among others, by Abul Khair Bhuiyan, Kazi Abul Bashar and Jahangir Alam Mintu. – Staff Reporter
