Govt pleased with mass uprising: Muhith

Finance Minister A M A Muhith has expressed satisfaction in the “mass uprising”, demanding “capital punishment” for Jamaat-i-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla on war crime charges.

“The government will appeal against Quader Molla’s verdict. The government is also content with the sentiments expressed by the people through mass protests,” Muhith told journalists after inaugurating the ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Students Hall’ in Sylhet Agricultural University on Saturday.

The Finance Minister said, “War criminals are being tried for their crimes. Adequate punishment will be ensured for all war criminals.”

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded life sentence to Molla for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.

The general people rejected the verdict as “lenient” and came down to the streets demanding his execution along with all other “war criminals”. The call for Molla’s execution is now reverberating across the nation.

The government is preparing to make changes to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, and a proposal in this regard is likely to be placed during the current session of parliament.

The “complexity” arose after the prosecution found there was no provision for it to appeal, after a verdict was spelt out by the ICT, under the existing law.

The Finance Minister underlined the initiatives taken by the government for building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh. Major progress has been made in sectors like agriculture, industry, education and health, which was possible with the development of technology, Muhith said.bdnews24.com
