Govt protests UN rights body’s 16-Jan statement

The government has protested the statement issued by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), a UN body, over the country’s present situation on 16 January last.
A formal letter in this regard has been sent to the OHCHR, said an official in Dhaka on Thursday.
The government in the letter has mentioned that BNP, Jamaat and Jamaat’s student wing Chhatra Shibir are responsible for arson attacks and terrorists activities in the country.The UN rights body on January 16 urged all political parties in Bangladesh to show restraint and bring an immediate end to the violence.
The UN rights body also called on the authorities to ensure the prompt, impartial and effective investigation into all killings committed – irrespective of whether they were committed by the State or non-State actors.
The government also said the statement might give wrong understanding to others.
On BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s confinement, the government said she is willingly staying there and she can go to her home anytime.
The confinement began on January 03 and continued till 19 January morning when police barricades from around Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan party office were withdrawn.- UNB
