Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam yesterday said that the government would file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking death for war crimes convicted and Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.
“We will file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking his death penalty after getting the full copy of its verdict,” the chief law officer of the state disclosed it to the reporters at his office.
The AG said that he is eagerly waiting to obtain the copies of the verdicts relating to the cases of Jamaat leaders Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Sayedee. The apex court upheld the death penalty for Mujahid, but it had awarded jail unto death for Sayedee for wartime offences. As per the provision, we will file review petition with the apex court in Sayedee’s case seeking death penalty for him in war crimes cases after obtaining the full copy of the verdict, he noted.
However, the chief law officer of the state could not specific the time on when the apex court might release Sayedee’s full verdict.
But, the AG hoped that the apex court would release a full verdict on another convicted war crimes and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid soon.
According to sources, the writing of the Mujahid case has already completed in the meantime. Now, the Justices are revising the copy of the verdict. After completion of their revision the copy of the verdict will be made public soon, apex court sources said.
In a verdict, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had on September 17 last year commuted the death penalty of Sayedee to imprisonment until death for crimes committed against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Earlier on February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes.
The apex court commuted his punishment to imprisonment until death following an appeal filed by the Jamaat-e-Islami leader against the ICT-1 judgment.
In another verdict, the apex court had on June 16 this year, upheld the death penalty of Mujahid for crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The government can start process for executing Mujahid after getting the full judgment. Mujahid can seek a review of the verdict within 15 days of receiving the full text of the judgment.
If the review petition is rejected, then he can only one option to seek presidential clemency to save his life. – Staff Reporter
