Guard against using chemicals on fruits: Hc asks govt

Dhaka, May 20 – The High Court on Monday directed the authorities concerned to form separate teams to monitor fruit markets and warehouses across the country so that none could able to use chemicals on fruits.
The HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after holding hearing on a supplementary petition filed by rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The HC bench also asked the inspector general of police, director general of Rapid Action Battalion and chairman and director concerned of Bangladesh Standards Testing Institute (BSTI) to form separate
teams in seven days to monitor the fruit markets and warehouses.
It also directed them to submit reports before this court after complying with the order by June 18.
Advocate Manzill Murshid, president of HRPB, told the court that if the fruit markets and warehouses are not monitored at this time, the unscrupulous businessmen would use the chemicals in the fruits, which will be harmful for public health.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner submitted a report to the High Court through Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar saying that magistrate and police have been deployed in the mango orchard in Rajshahi as per its previous order.
The High Court on April 9 had ordered the authorities concerned to deploy police within seven days in major mango orchards across the country including Rajshahi to prevent use of chemicals on mangoes.
The court had also directed to submit a report on this by next 30 days.
Manzill told the court that following a writ petition, the High Court on February 29, 2012, had issued several directives on the government to stop the use of hazardous chemicals in fruits and to take action
against the people responsible for using those chemicals.
But some dishonest people are reportedly using hazardous chemicals in fruits particularly in mangoes during the harvesting seasons, he said.
Earlier, on February 29, 2012, the HC had passed a verdict to stop the use of poisonous chemicals in fruits following a petition filed by the group. – Staff Reporter
