Half day hartal protesting Tonu Murder: 12 JU students held

Police arrested 12 Jahangirnagar University (JU) students from the Prantik Gate of Jahangirnagar university campus on Monday morning during a half day hartal observed demanding the trial of the killers of cultural activist Tonu.
The half-day hartal, from 6:00am to 12:00 noon was called by Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti-Imperialist Students’ Union, two major left-leaning student alliances.The arrestee students are— Masuk Helal Anik, Vice president of of Chhatra front of JU unit, Susmita Morium, secretary of Chhatra front, Abid Sarkar Sohag, Secretary of JU Chhatra Union, Akash, Ujjal, Mitul, Siyam, Jisan, Taniya, Rakib,Chandan and Tusar.
Around 50 students under the banner of Progotishil Chhatra jote blockade the Dhaka-Aricha highway as per the central half day hartal, from 6:00am to 12:00 noon, sponsored by Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti-Imperialist Students’ Union.
While Ashulia police lead by Additional SP of Dhaka district of Kazi Ashraful Azim dispersed the blockade charging batons and arrested twelve protestors from the spot around 8:40 am and took them to the Ashulia police station.
In the immediate reaction, some leader and activists of the left leaning students brought out a protest procession condemn the police arrest and besiege the register building demanding the resignation of university proctor Prof Tapan Kumar.
The protestor said they will continue their besiege programme until the resignation of proctor.
Additional SP of Dhaka district of Kazi Ashraful Azim told journalists that strike is the fundamental rights of citizen but no right to blockade the highway”.
Additional police have been deployed in the university Prantik gate for further awkward situation said SP Azim.
JU Proctor Prof Tapan Kumar Saha said, “Police arrested some students for blockade of the roads”.
Plying motor vehicles resumed on Dhaka-Aricha highway after 2 and half hour, till filling this report the University authority trying to redeem them. – JU Correspondent
