Harris, Mayor Arif indicted afresh in Kibria murder case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in a supplementary charge-sheet submitted on Thrsday indicted eleven persons including BNP leader Harris Chowdhury, former political secretary to the party chief Khaleda Zia, the the Mayor of Sylher Ariful Haque Chowdhury, in connection with the death of former finance minister and Awami League (AL) leader Shah AMS Kibria in abomb blast at Baidyer Bazar in Habiganj on January 27, 2005. .
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Meherunnesa Parul of CID of Sylhet region and also investigation officer (IO) of the case filed the charge-sheet before Habiganj District and Session Jude’s Court.Those indicted afresh are: BNP leader Harris Chowdhury, former mayor of Habiganj Golam Kibria Gaus, Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Mufti Abdul Hai, Mufti Tajuddin, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mohammad Ali, Badrul, Mahibur Rahman, Kazal Ahmed and Hafez Yahia.
All of them were accused of carrying out bomb attacks and killing of people.
“Eleven more persons were accused in the fresh charge-sheet in the Kibria murder case. With them, a total of 35 persons have been indicted in the three charge-sheets. Of them, names of three accused were dropped from the supplementary charge-sheet as one of them died and addresses of two others could not be found,” Police Super of Habiganj, Joydeb Kumar Bhadra told journalists.
A grenade attack was carried out on a rally at Baidyer Bazar in Habiganj on January 27 in 2005. Seriously injured Shah AMS Kibria dies on his way to Dhaka. Four others were killed and many others injured in the blast.
AL leader Abdul Mazid Khan filed two cases — one for murder and the other under the Explosive Substances Act — with Habiganj Sadar Police Station the next day.
Earlier on March 19 in 2005, a charge-sheet was submitted before the court accusing 10 people. On June 20 in 2011, sixteen more persons including Lutfozzaman Babar, ex-state minister for home affairs, and Mufti Abdul Hannan, chief of banned islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-Al Islami (Huji) were made accused in a supplementary charge-sheet in the case.
Asma Kibria, wife of Shah AMS Kibria, had filed a naraji (no-confidence) petition with the court against the first supplementary charge-sheet filed in 2011. Following her petition, the court on January 5, 2012 ordered the CID to carry out fresh probe by a senior officer. Response of Asma Kibria to the second supplimentary charge-sheet filed on Thursday could not be ascertained. – Agencies
