The first day of three day hartal, called by local businessmen, is underway in Taherpur municipal area under Baghmara upazila of Rajshahi district from Friday morning.The business community is observing the hartal in protest against the killing of a young businessman.
Hartal supporters brought out a procession and set fire to tyres and barricaded roads at Chaitali intersection and Haritala Chattar of Durgapur Road.
All business organisations and shops remained closed. The movement of all types of vehicles remained halted for the general strike.
No case was filed in the connection of killing of Rubel Hossain, while by Sub-Inspector Mobarak Hossain filed a case against 500 unnamed people in connection with setting fire to a police outpost.
Baghmara police station Officer-in-Charge Ismail Hossain said the situation is under control amid hartal.
Rajshahi District Police Super Alamgir Kabir told banglanews, “Police opened fire on agitating locals in self-defence as they attacked police outpost, leaving one dead and five others injuried.”
