Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached New York where she will attend the 68th UN General Assembly (UNGA).
A large number of expatriate supporters of ruling Awami League turned out at the JFK Airport to greet party President Hasina. A number of opposition supporters also gathered there with black flag o protest.
The plane carrying Hasina and her entourage landed at the airport at around 9:15am local time.
From there, the Prime Minister went to the Grand Hayat Hotel where she will be staying during her visit.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the UN AKA Momen, and Bangladesh Ambassador to the US Akramul Qader greeted Hasina at the airport.
Several hours before Hasina reached the airport, activists of Awami League, its youth front, Juba League, and volunteer front Swechchhasebak League thronged the airport to welcome the party chief.
Opposition supporters turned out sporting black flags. Both sides observed their programmes amid police cordon.
Hasina left Dhaka on Sunday night for the New York with her 133-strong delegation. She is expected to return home on Sept 30.
The Prime Minister will address the UNGA on Friday.
She will hold meetings with her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the UNGA.
Hasina is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma besides attending other programmes.-bdnews24.com
