Hasnat shown arrested in Gulshan attack case; remanded afresh

Separate courts here on Saturday placed ex-NSU teacher Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim on an eight-day fresh remand and Toronto University student Tahmid Hasib Khan on a 6-day remand again in connection with Gulshan terror attack.Earlier in the morning, Hasnat was shown arrested in the Gulshan café attack case and produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Imdadul Hauqe with a 10-day remand plea on the expiry of his eight-day remand.Besides, Tahmid was produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi after his eight-day remand.

The courts passed the orders after hearings on their remand petitions.A court here on August 4 placed Hasnat Karim and Tahmid Hasib on the eight-day remand each.A team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) arrested Hasnat and Tahmid on Wednesday from the city’s Gulshan and Bashundhara areas respectively for their suspected link to the attack.They were shown arrested under Section 54 of the CrPC.Abul Hasnat, also a businessman, and Tahmid Hasib , also a Canadian permanent resident of Bangladeshi origin, were rescued along with 11 others during the commando operation at the Holey Artisan Bakery at the city’s diplomatic zone Gulshan on July 2 following a 12-hour hostage standoff.Their family members claimed that they had remained traceless since then.However, law enforcement agencies said that they set them free after interrogation over the café’ attack.Twenty hostages, including 17 foreign nationals, were killed by militants, while five militants and one suspected associate of the attackers were killed during a commando operation in the café on July 2.
