The High Court on Thursday directed the Gulshan thana police to arrest United Hospital staff (brother) Saiful Islam and produce him before the court on December 7 for ‘sexually harassing’ a female patient.
It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why punitive action will not be taken against the United Hospital authorities and the staff. An HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Reza-ul-Haque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman passed the order.
The Home Secretary, the Health Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, the DC (North) , the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station and the Managing Director of the United Hospital have been asked to respond to the rule within a week.
The court passed the order on its own motion following reports by Daily Jugantor and Ekattor Television in this regard, said deputy attorney general of the court Tapas Kumer Biswas.
According to the Daily Jugantor report, the female patient was unconscious at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital after an operation and when she regained her consciousness she found brother Saiful Islam abusing her sexually.
The patient’s husband alleged that he was allowed to meet his wife after 16 hours of the incident.
The hospital authorities sacked Saiful but did not hand over him to police despite her husband’s request, said the report.- Agencies
