HC grants bail to CU teachers in ICT case

Dhaka, Oct 9 – The High Court on Tuesday granted ad interim bail for six months to Chittagong University teacher Maidul Islam in a case filed under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on July 24. In response to a bail petition, the HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mustafizur Rahman granted him bail for six months in the case paving the way for his release from jail.
There is no legal bar for Maidul Islam to get released from the jail following the HC order, Advocate Hasnat Qayyum, counsel for Maidul said.
On September 24, Chittagong court ordered to send Maidul to jail on charges of defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The court sent him to jail denying his bail petition after he surrendered before the court on completion of his eight weeks bail granted by the High Court.
Bangladesh Chhatra League’s CU unit’s former executive member Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz filed a case against him under Section 57 of ICT Act with Hathazari Police Station on July 23.
Chittagong University authorities also temporarily suspended Maidul Islam on September 25.
Teachers and students of several universities including Jahangirnagar University formed a human chain demanding Maidul’s release. – Staff Reporter
