HC issues contempt rule against Home Secy, IGP

Dhaka, Aug 30 – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday issued a contempt of court rule against the Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on the charge of not implementing its order over installing speed governor seals in motor vehicles. In the rule, the court asked them to explain in four weeks as to why legal action should not be taken against them for not complying with its directive.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali came up with the rule following a contempt of court petition filed by Nasir Uddin Khan, a resident of Dhaka, against the three high officials of the Government.
Petitioner’s lawyer Barrister Mohammad Abdul Muntakim told newsmen that the High Court in 2009 directed the authorities concerned of the Government to take steps to install speed governor seals in all the vehicles by June 30, 2010, to control the speeds of the vehicles in a bid to prevent road accidents.
But, the respondents have not taken any step for complying with the directive of the High Court, which amounts to contempt of court, he said. – Special Correspondent
