HC rule seeks explanation on wrong side driving in Dhaka

Dhaka, – The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the authorities concerned should not be directed to stop driving vehicles on the wrong sides of roads in the capital, unb reported.An HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq issued the rule following a petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer.
Ten people, including Home Secretary, IGP, Vice Chancellors of Dhaka University, Jagannath University and Jahangirnagar University, have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks.
On April 13, Barrister Mohammad Ali, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed a writ petition seeking a ban on driving vehicles on wrong routes in Dhaka city.
Mohammad Ali said according to Motor Vehicles Ordinance-1983 driving of vehicles on wrong side is a punishable offence.
However, some vehicles, including those of VIPs and university buses, are seen plying the wrong sides of roads violating rules and causing road accidents, he said.
