Hearing of sedition case against Khaleda deferred

Dhaka-The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Tuesday deferred the hearing on whether to take cognizance in a sedition case lodged against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for her comment on the number of martyrs of the country’s liberation war, to August 10.Judge Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the court passed the order allowing time to the defence. Khaleda Zia’s counsel Sanaullah Mia filed the time petition seeking time citing illness of the BNP Chief.
On January 25, lawyer Momtaj Uddin Ahmed Mehedi filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka.
On December 21, last year, Khaleda Zia, during her discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh raised question about the number of Liberation War martyrs. “There are controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There are also many books and documents on the controversies,” she said on the occasion. -Court Correspondent
