Dense fog and heavy traffic have brought to a halt vehicular movement on highways connecting Dhaka to Northern and Southern parts of the
country on Friday, the first day of the 2-day blockade break.
Traffic was jammed on the 25-kilometer stretch from Chandina to Daudkandi on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway since Friday early morning.
Eliotganj Police outpost’s Seargent Md Hasan also confirmed that traffic on the stretch from Chandina to Daudkandi bridge’s toll plaza
has come to a halt.
“A large number of vehicles are on the highway as there’s a 2-day break on the blockade. Moreover, the fog was dense in the morning,” he
said.
Police station chiefs of Siddhirganj and Sonargaon Abdul Matin and Atikur Rahman also gave similar descriptions of the situation. They
said they were trying their best to keep the situation normal.
Traffic is moving slowly on the highways in Kanchpur, Sonargaon and Siddhirganj area, reported bdnews24.com’s Narayanganj correspondent.
The highways connecting Northern part of the country are also clogged since the morning.
Vehicles are moving slowly on both sides of the Bangabandhu bridge and at Hatikumrul area on Dhaka-Bogra highway.
Hatikumrul Highway Police Station’s OC Ali Farid Ahmed told bdnews24.com that traffic was rather low in the morning but it became
thicker as the day progressed, slowing down the movement of vehicles.
However, traffic movement was smooth on the Bangabandhu Bridge, said the bridge’s West-side Police Station OC ATM Aminul Islam.
Meanwhile, ferry operations on Thursday night at the Mawa-Kawrkandi crossing was suspended due to dense fog causing long queue of vehicles
waiting to cross the Padma river.
Ferry crossing at the integral point to South from Dhaka resumed after 11 hours around 10am but the huge queue of vehicles caused a traffic
