Human chain demands immediate release of Manna

Speakers at a human chain at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday demanded immediate release of Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna. The human chain organised by the Bangladesh New Generation Party (BNGP) was attended by leaders of the Nagorik Oikya, journalists and members of the civil society.
Nagorik Oikya adviser and former MP SM Akram who spoke on the occasion said Manna believed in decent politics and wanted to take part in the city corporation election. He has been prevented from doing so through the arrest.He demanded immediate release of Manna and said that Nagorik Oikya would not step back from its pledge to fight for establishing the rights of citizens and democracy in the country.
Presided over by Zahid Iqbal, president of BNGP the function was also addressed by Shahidullah Kaiser, convener Nagorik Oikya, Dhaka city North, Mostafa Kamal Majumder, editor, GreenWatch Dhaka among others.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder said the way political leaders like Mahmudur Rahman Manna were being obstructed from performing their political activities has created a situation to demand guarantee of normal political activities in the country.
He said people ventilate their grievances through activities of political parties and their leaders. If normal political activities are obstructed, the people seek other forms of protest which is not very cordial. Our political leaders should take note of this and be sincere about upholding the rights of opposition political leaders. He demanded immediate release of Mahmudur Rahman Manna.
Shahidullah Kaiser said that autocratic activities of those at the corridors of power have crossed all limits. The arrest and detention of Mahmudur Rahman Manna proved this. The people were now anxious for protecting their democratic political rights.
Zahid Iqbal protested Mahmudur Rahman Mann’s detention on the indefensible case and said he should be released without delay in view of his deteriorating health situation. – Staff Reporter
