Dhaka, July 4 – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday assured Bangladesh of its all support and cooperation in constructing Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.The assurance came when visiting Director General of IAEA Yukiya Amano met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
He said the IAEA DG expressed satisfaction over the security measures taken by the government for the nuclear power plant.
Yukiya Amano said the overall steps relating to the nuclear power plant are much more advanced than he thought about.
Amano said he is happy seeing strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and enthusiasm of people over the power plant.
The IAEA DG said nuclear energy could be used in all sectors, including agriculture sector, and thanked the Prime Minister for the ratification of ‘Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities’.
In response, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought IAEA’s continued support and apprised him about three-layer security measures taken at power plant.
Hasina said the training of technicians of the projects has already started.
The Prime Minister expressed her intention to construct second nuclear power plant in Bangladesh saying the demand for electricity is growing gradually as the living standard of rural people have improved significantly. They are now using electronic items, including ACs, she added.
Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafesh Osman, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, chief coordinator on SDG M Abul Kalam Azad were, among others, present. – UNB
