Indo-Bangla JRC meeting postponed

The India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission (JRC) meeting, scheduled to be held here for June 18-19, has been postponed due to India’s eleventh hour ‘request’ as the Indian Minister has some domestic compulsions.“Yes, it has been postponed. In fact, our minister has some domestic engagements and requested to postpone it. It’ll be held at a convenient time mutually agreed by both the countries,” Sujit Ghosh, First Secretary (Political & Information) of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, told UNB on Sunday.
Indian High Commission in Dhaka Pankaj Saran at a meet-the-press programme a couple of days back said the Indian Water Resources Minister will be here for attending the JRC meeting which has vast agenda, and Teesta Water Sharing issues was supposed to be a priority one.
In the last (37th) JRC meeting that took place on March 18-19, 2010 in New Delhi, the ministers of the two countries had swapped proposals over the Teesta deal.
Talking to UNB, JRC member Mir Sajjad Hossain said Bangladesh was ready to hold the meeting.
Responding to a query, Hossain said the meeting was postponed due to Indian Minister’s preoccupation at home. “Indian government will give the fresh date later.”
The proposed Teesta deal remained shelved since September, 2011 when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised objections and refused to come to Bangladesh with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Dhaka visit. (Source: UNB)
