Infighting behind AL candidates’ defeat in UZ polls: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said the Awami League-backed candidates suffered defeat in the ongoing upazila elections due to the party’s internal conflicts.
He viewed that the local government elections like upazila parishad polls should be held on party basis.
The minister was talking to reporters after a discussion at Sylhet auditorium on Wednesday.
The finance minister said, “It is meaningless to hold local government election like upazila polls. The role the political parties in the upazila polls has already made it a political one.”Criticizing BNP, he said threat of oust-government movement is unbecoming for BNP leaders as their previous movements all failed. They have always been opposing the government, he added.
Simantik, a Non-government organization arranged a discussion styled ‘Enlightened Sylhet: Development in Health and Education Sector’ and awarded reception to the minister and three others – USA-based university Professor Abdullah H Baki, Dr Shahela Khatun and Ahmed Al Kabir.
The minister addressed the discussion as chief guest while founder of Simantik and also chairman of Rupali Bank Dr Ahmed AL Kabir presided over it.
Vice Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University Dr Md. Shahidullah Talukder, Prof Baki, Sylhet city AL unit president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, Sylhet district AL unit general secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, among others, spoke on the function.
