Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack on a police check post in Savar on Wednesday that left a constable dead, monitoring group SITE says.Print Friendly and PDF.Unknown assailants attacked a check post at Savar’s Ashulia around 8am and hacked the constables on duty with sharp weapons, killing one and leaving another seriously injured.In a web post on Nov 4, SITE said that it had tracked the militant group’s web post claiming the attack.SITE Intelligence Group had earlier reported that IS claimed the murders of two foreigners—Italian aid worker Cesare Tavella and Japanese national Kunio Hoshi–and the bombings on a Shia gathering in Old Dhaka. Once a little known research group, SITE intelligence surprised many last year when it published a video showing the murder of American journalist Steven Joel Sotloff even before the jihadists did.According to the UK-based newspaper The Independent, SITE (Search for International Terrorist Entities) is a for-profit US-based consultancy group that monitors and tracks the activities of “international terrorists and the global jihadist network”.The group has ties to both the US government and commercial clients and specialises in monitoring the online activities of jihadists and issuing warnings to its clients, the newspaper said in an article last year.According to a profile of Rita Katz, Director and co-founder of the SITE Intelligence Group, she has been studying, tracking, and analysing international terrorists, the global jihadist network and terrorism-financing for over a decade.The New Yorker magazine in 2006 described SITE’s customers as “people in government […] frustrated by how long it takes to get information through official channels” as well as “people in corporate security and in the media”.
