Jamaat adds Wednesday to its hartal series

The Jamaat hartal also included Wednesday, the day after the holy Ashura forcing the educations boards to reschedule the JSC and JDC exams.
Jamaat-e-Islami, a major party of the BNP-led political alliance, yesterday called the latest hartal for Wednesday as the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty to party leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman on charge of crimse against humanity. The announcement of new hartal came when the Islamist party has already enforced a three-days of hartal on Thursday, Sunday and Monday protesting the verdict of International Crime Tribunal that awarded death sentence to party ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.
The party called another spell of hartal for Thursday protesting the ICT judgement which also awarded death penalty to top Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali. The Jamaat has excluded only Tuesday from hartal programme in view of the sake of holy Ashura.
According to a press statement, the Jamaat will hold prayers to mark the Ashura and for the release of party top leaders. The party relaxed the 72-hour hartal for 12 hours which ended last evening.
Meanwhile, despite calling hartals one after another Jamaat-Shibir activists are missing from the streets to enforce the shutdowns.
A mid-level Jamaat leader preferring anonymity told journalists that they are observing the situation and the government’s attitude in execution of any Jamaat leader.
He said the Jamaat leaders and activists are very much on the streets but do not involve themselves in violent activities.
The Jamaat leader however warned that the party might announce greater programme if the situation demands. “If the government does not refrain from its rigid stance. We will go to non-stop like hartal, if need be,” he added.
The Ministry of Education yesterday rescheduled the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations slated for November 5 and 6 due to Jamaat’s shutdown calls.
The examination scheduled to be held on November 5 will now take place on November 19 while the November 6 exam will be held on November 20.
The weeklong hartals seriously disrupted the young JSC and JDC examinees because of frequent rescheduling of the exams putting them into difficulties.
Around 21 lakh examinees will take part in the JSC and JDC examinations which were scheduled to be held on November 2 but the date has been rescheduled several times.
Meanwhile, barring some stray incidents, the three-day hartal of Jamaat ended at 6:00pm yesterday.
The next spell of Jamaat hartal will begin at 6:00am on Wednesday and end at 6:00am on Friday. – Staff Reporter
