Review petition to follow: Defence. No scope: AG

Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam today said there is no scope for filing any petition to review the Appellate Division verdict upholding the death penalty to Jamaat leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2.
“I don’t think there is scope for filing any review. The ICT act of 1973 is a special act and there is no provision for filing any review under it. Although in the case of Abdul Quader Mollah, the defence filed a review petition, the High Court rejected it,” he said.Prosecutor Dr Tureen Afroz came up with the same view, saying, “Under the ICT act of 1973, there is no scope for filing a review petition.”
The defence, however, said they would file a petition to review the verdict of the Appellate Division (AD).
A four-member bench of the AD headed by Justice SK Sinha today delivered its verdict, upholding the ICT-2 judgement that handed down death penalty to Jamaat senior assistant secretary general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman for crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation. – BSS
