Voicing its apprehension that the government is going to implement its blueprint for punishing their party leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday demanded his unconditional release. In a statement, party acting ameer Mokbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman urged the country’s people to raise their voice against the government’s all ‘plots’ against Sayedee.Closing arguments on the appeals filed by both sides over the International Crimes Tribunal-1 verdict condemning Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death for his 1971 Libration War crimes, the Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the supplementary petitions from both sides keeping its verdict pending to be delivered any day. On February 28, 2013, in its first judgment, ICT-1 condemned Sayedee to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, acquitting him of a dozen of the charges. Sayedee was sentenced to death in two of the charges even though found guilty beyond reasonable doubt in eight others. He was sentenced to death for the abduction, torture and murder of Ibrahim Kutti and the killing of Bisha Bali in Pirojpur during the Liberation War. On March 28 last year, the prosecution and the defence counsel filed separate appeals with the Appellate Division against the trial court verdict. In the statement Jamaat, claimed that the charges against Sayedee for the killing of Ibrahim Kutti and the killing of Bisha Bali in Pirojpur during the Liberation War are false, fabricated and motivated. “We’re concerned that the government’s chief law officer, attorney general, on his own initiative went to Pirojpur and Barisal in search of records in connection with the case. The over-enthusiasm of the attorney general and not seeking of the records by the court have proved that the government is trying to hush up the truth.” “We strongly condemn and protest the government’s heinous plot against Moulana Sayedee,” the statement reads. – UNB
