Jamaat enforces hartal, vehicles vandalised

DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has enforced a daylong hartal today protesting the verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 against its assistant secretary general M Kamaruzzaman.Law enforcers have taken position in different points of the capital and also in districts towns.
On May 9, Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan announced the shutdown programme.
On the day, the tribunal awarded M Kamaruzzaman to death sentence for his crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, vandalized couple of vehicles and threw brick chips at Police in front of Lab-Aid Hospital in city’s Dhanmondi area on Saturday noon.
Some Shibir activists led-by it Literary Secretary Yasin Arafat took out a procession around 12:45pm in support of the Sunday’s hartal.
Witnesses said being resisted by police, from the procession, Shibir men started throwing brick chips to police and vandalizing vehicles.
Later, police picked up two Shibir activists from spot. The identity of the detainees were could not be known instantly.
