The Pir Shaheb of Charmonai, Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim on tuesday said that the backbone of the electoral process had been broken and a constitutional body like the Election Commission destroyed and turned into government’s plaything through vote rigging in city corporation elections.
The Pir Shaheb who is also the Ameer of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) also alleged through the vote rigging the nation has been subjected to a cruel joke. He said through the elections the nation had high hoped of steering clear of violence.The IAB Ameer said that the nation had expected the government would stage a free, fair and transparent election and help steer the country clear of the prevailing political stalemate. Those expectations have been demolished and new elements of uncertainty contributing to violence have been created.
The Pir Shaheb said that polling agents of IAB-backed agents along with those of opposition-backed candidates were had been driver out of polling centres by activists of AL-backed candidates. – Staff Reporter
