Journalist killed in Chuadanga

A local journalist has been stabbed to death at his own residence at Piaratala village in Jibannagar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayem, 32, the Jibannagar upazila correspondent of national daily Dainik Samakal and son of Mollah Abul Khayer of the village.

Police and family sources said a criminal wearing the attire of a sage entered the bedroom of Sayem around 1am on Wednesday while he along with his wife and two children was asleep.

The attacker stabbed the journalist indiscriminately with a sharp weapon.

The miscreant also attacked Sayem’s father as he came forward in aid of the journalist hearing his screams, leaving both of them injured.

The injured were first taken to Jibannagar Hospital from where Sayem was shifted to Jessore Sadar Hospital. Later, he was sent to a hospital in the capital where he died around 4pm.

Officer-in-charge of Jibannagar Police Station Humayun Kabir said they arrested a youth, Rajib Ahmed, in connection with the incident as the victim’s family identified him as the killer.

Police super of Chuadanga Rashidul Hasan said they were investigating the killing. “The main killer has already been arrested. We’ll investigate whether anyone else is involved in the killing,” he said.

Meanwhile, local journalists staged demonstrations in the upazila headquarters in the afternoon as the death news of their fellows travelled fast.

They demanded exemplary punishment of the killers.
