Judge gets four years in prison for carrying drug

Dhaka – A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced a Senior Judge to four years in prison in a case filed for carrying 342 bottles phensedyl syrup.
Judge Ruhul Ameen of the Second Additional Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court of Dhaka pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict Javed Imam, suspended Senior Assistant Judge of Bhola.
The court also fined Javed Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer two months’ simple imprisonment. However, earlier, he will have to suffer 4 years’ rigorous imprisonment.
On December 1, last year, Javed Imam, Senior Assistant Judge of Bola was arrested with 342 bottles of phensedyl and a loaded pistol from the capital’s New Market area.
A case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act against Javed the following day with the New Market Police Station.
The Law and Justice Division of the Law Ministry suspended him on the following day.
After his arrest, he was produced before some newsmen at New Market Police Station.
The High Court Division bench on December 5 said presenting anybody of the custody of a law-enforcing agency before the media is a violation of law and the Constitution of the country.
Later, a Dhaka court also had asked six police officials to explain as to why they produced Javed before the press.
On December 20 of the same year, police submitted charge sheet against him. – Court Correspondent
