Dhaka – ARTCON in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is organising a two week-long solo art exhibition of artist Mahbub Zamal Shamim titled ‘Jungle of Humanity’ on Friday, 10 November 2017 at 4:30 pm at the ‘Gallery-2’ of National Art Gallery, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka.Eminent artist Mustafa Monwar, pioneer architect Bashirul Haq, renowned sculptor Hamiduzzaman Khan, Brigadier General Dr. Suraiya Rahman (Retd.), Prof. Firdous Azim, Dr. Ashrafunessa, Professor, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, noted artist Shishir Bhattacharjee, Professor, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka and sculptor Lala Rukh Selim, Professor, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka will jointly inaugurate the exhibition as distinguished guests. Mr. Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will preside over the occasion. Reciter and visual artist Mithun Ahmed will conduct the ceremony.
Exhibition is open for public viewing from 10 to 24 November 2017 at ‘Gallery-2’ of National Art Gallery, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka. Daily 11 am – 8 pm.
Artist Mahbub Zamal Shamim was born in 1960 in Jessore, Bangladesh. He spent his childhood with legendary Bengali master painter S.M. Sultan as an apprentice. During his student life, he successfully developed the style of ‘Beauty in Bbesity’. Shamim graduated from Sculpture department of Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka in 1985 and obtained his MFA degree in 1990. During his academic days, he founded an art institute, Charupith, in 1985 with the vision to increase the practice and research of art in society and life in general, as well as to encourage everyone from across the country to open up art schools for children.
He is also credited with introducing the concept of “Mongol Shobhajatra” as a medium of celebrating the Bengali Noboborsho (Bengali New Year) using various traditional heritages and motifs and elevating the procession to a national festival. This has enabled him to help integrate art into society, something Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and S.M. Sultan had envisioned before him. He achieved his fellowship on Innovative Social Entrepreneurship from Ashoka Foundation, USA in 1997-1999. The artist has held three solo exhibitions and has also participated in numerous national and international group art exhibitions, among those includes the 55th Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy in 2013. He has won Gold Medal Award from Rotary International Bangladesh in 2011. His works have been collected by several national and international organizations, and many private collectors in home and abroad.
