Harvesting of jute is now going in full swing in all the seven upazilas of the district in the current season.
Sources with the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said cultivators this year are not facing the usual problem of jute rotting due to adequate waters in ditches, canals and many jute fields.
The sources said the target of cultivation of the cash crop in the district in the current season surpassed the target fixed by the DAE.
A total of 4,148 hectares were brought under jute cultivation against the target of 4,048 hectares. Of the total, 3,350 hectares were brought under the cultivation of Tosha variety of jute, 688 hectares local variety and 10 hectares Kenaf.
Alimuzzaman Mia, Deputy Director (DD) Department of Agriculture Extension, said all inputs like seeds, fertilizers and insecticides were supplied in due time to the cultivators.
Moreover, the cultivators were given necessary trainings on modern jute cultivation which helped achieving a satisfactory yield of the crop in the district, the sources said.
Talking to BSS, Billal Uddin, a cultivator, said, “We are happy to get satisfactory production of jute this year and there is no rotting problem as there is adequate waters everywhere in the district. We will be happy if we get the fair prices of the crop.”
Market sources said jute is now being sold in different markets of district at prices ranging between Taka 1,400 to Taka 1,600 depending on variety and quality.
