Khaleda also offer election-time govt formula

Dhaka – After unveiling the proposals for forming a stronger Election Commission, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday said she will come up with a framework of a neutral election-time government at the right time. UNB news agency reported
“Without a neutral election-time government, cooperation of the key related ministries cannot be ensured, and it’s not possible to hold a free, fair and credible election,” she said.
Khaleda further said, “To enable the Election Commission to offer the nation a free, fair and credible election, the facilitative role of an election-time neutral administration is a must, we shall spell out the framework of a neutral election-time government before the nation at an appropriate time.”
The BNP chief came up with the remarks while presenting a 13-point proposal for constituting and strengthening the Election Commission at city’s Westin Hotel in the afternoon.
She said mere constituting a neutral Election Commission on the basis of political parties’ consensus is not sufficient to hold a fair, inclusive and acceptable election considering the realities obtaining in the present-day Bangladesh.
“A free and fair election can’t be ensured without all-out administrative support and assistance of the law enforcement agencies, including the defense forces,” Khaleda observed.
BNP had boycotted the 10th parliament polls as their demand for election-time non-party caretaker government is not met.
However, Khaleda in her 16-page written speech did not mention caretaker government, signaling that her party may abandon its long-drawn caretaker government demand.
