BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday described sending of three senior party leaders including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jails rejecting their bails as a manifestation of severe repressive attitude of the government to the party.
In a statement she expressed her resentment over denial of bails by a lower court despite granting of it at the higher court and demanded unconditional release of the senior leaders, who also included standing committee member Mirza Abbas and Dhaka city BNP leader Abdus Salam.“The BNP central leaders were sent to jail by rejecting their bails while they surrendered before the country because they uphold the rights to speak about the democracy and sovereignty of the country,” said the former premier.
Expressing her deep concern, Khaleda said, “We are living in the reign of autocratic rulers where the country is being at the whims of a single person and none has the rights to speak truth.”
The statement signed by BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Amin Rizvi that the present government has turned the country into a greater prison by resorting to killing and disappearing of opposition party and arresting its leaders and activists indiscriminately.
The BNP chairperson alleged that the government wants to cling to power illegally by arresting central leaders of BNP by rotation.
She further said the government sent the BNP leaders to jail to divert the attention of people from its anti-democratic, anti-people and anti-humanitarian activities to save them from the wrath of people.
Khaleda said the government would never be succeeded to implement its master plan to eliminate the opposition party.
She said the Awami League government never tried to read the l language of minds of the people and undermined the democratic values always.
The 19-party leader warned that the consequence of the AL was not good in the past due to their autocratic rule and it would not be good in the future also.
She asserted that the ongoing movement cannot be weakened by arresting BNP central leaders by implicating them in “false and fabricated” cases; rather the people are getting p prepared to create strong resistance against all the misdeeds of the government. – Staff Reporteer
