Khaleda, Koko’s wife daughter face Sonali loan default case

A Dhaka court on Monday granted a petition of Sonali Bank Limited to include BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others in the case filed against the directors of Dandy Dyeing Limited for defaulting a loan of Tk 45.49 crore.
Judge-in-Charge Ruksana Pervin Happy of the Money Loan Court-1 (Artha Rin Adalat-1) of Dhaka passed the order in the afternoon in response to the plea of the lawyers of Sonali Bank.Earlier on March 8, Senior Executive Officer of the Nazrul Islam submitted the petition for inclusion of the new defendants following the death of Khaleda Zia’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko. Other three newly included defendants are Koko’s wife Shormila Rahman Sithi and her daughters Juthiya Rahman and Jahiya Rahman. It may be mentioned that late Koko left no son to inherit his assets and liabilities. Later, the court fixed April 12 for framing issue in the case.
The company had borrowed Tk 12.16 crore from the bank’s principal branch of the capital on October 16, 2001, the case statement says. On October 2, 2012, Sonali Bank filed the case against the defendants after their company, the Dandy Dying Limited failed to pay off the principal loan with interest, accumulated over 12 years to Tk 45.49 crore.
The other defendants are Dandy Dyeing’s Director Tareque Rahman’s business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun, his wife Shahina Begum, late Sayeed Iskander’s wife Nasrin Iskander and his sons Shams Iskander and Shafin Iskander and daughter Sumaiya Iskander, Gazi Galib Abdus Sattar, Shamsun Nahar and Masud Hassan.
On October 16, 2001, the bank’s governing body relieved the interests on the loan following an application of the defendants and later, the loan was rescheduled. But, the defendants did not repay the dues of the bank despite they issued a final notice on February 28, 2010. – Court Correspondent
