Dhaka – BNP chief Khaleda Zia will lead the party’s delegation at the talks with the president over forming a new Election Commission.
“The chairperson will lead the 10-member delegation, which includes the secretary general and members of the national standing committee,” Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told journalists. He said that the list of the delegation has been sent to the Bangabhaban on Wednesday.President Md Abdul Hamid’s initiative to hold talks with political parties commences on Dec 18 with the BNP, which had boycotted the 2014 national election.
Senior party leaders said that the delegation includes Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and policymaking standing committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Tarikul Islam, Mahbubur Rahman, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
The Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led commission’s term expires in February. It was formed by erstwhile president Zillur Rahman through a search committee set up after talks with political parties in 2012.
President Hamid has taken a similar initiative, which the BNP has welcomed while the ruling Awami League said it would accept whatever the president does.
The new commission will oversee the next national election slated for 2019. – News Desk
