Bnp chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has said in London that Bangladesh urgently needs an acceptable election to overcome the political crisis that the country is facing due to the absence of people’s representation in the government, says a message received in Dhaka.
BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman on Saturday warned the government that the country’s political situation may take a serious turn if the government does not resolve the current crisis.“A political crisis is there in the country. The situation is gradually getting worse. A devastating storm may hit the political landscape if it’s not resolved soon and the government won’t be able to save itself from the political disaster adopting an ostrich policy,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “We would like to tell the government that resolve the crisis and hold a fair and inclusive election before the time runs out. Or else, the crisis will invite a disaster that may badly attack the foundation of our national existence and security.”
Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal arranged the discussion titled ‘No alternative to holding inclusive national polls to overcome political crisis’ at the Jatiya Press Club.
Mahbub, an army officer-turned politician, said the current crisis is not only harming the politics, but also damaging the country’s economy.
He lamented that though foreigners are making no investment in the country, crores of taka are being siphoned off abroad.
“A residential area in Canada has been called ‘Begumbagh’ where the wives of many rich men are living, while their husbands plundering money here and laundering that,” he alleged.
Voicing deep concern over the slide in the law and order, Mahbub said the incidents of killing, repression and enforced disappearance have now become regular affairs as there is no democracy.
He alleged that Awami League destroyed the spirit of the Liberation War by holding a “lopsided and voter-less election” on January 5, 2014.
The senior BNP leader urged the government to return to the path of democracy taking lessons from the past.- UNB
