Khaleda’s release must for inclusive polls: Mosharraf

Dhaka, July 28 – BNP’s senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday said Khaleda Zia must be freed from jail through a street movement to ‘restore democracy’ and ensure an inclusive general election in the country.“The current fascist government has been in power by force without people’s votes. They’ve got global recognition as an autocratic regime. The country lost democracy due to its fascist attitude,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “People must take to the streets to free Khaleda Zia for the restoration of the lost democracy holding the next polls with the participation of all parties.”
National Awami Party (NAP-Bhasani) arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the government has kept Khaleda in jail by resorting to various tricks and establishing its control over the judiciary.
He said people and friendly countries want a participatory and credible election to be held in Bangladesh. “It’s now people’s responsibility to ensure the current regime’s fall to save the country.”
About three city polls, the BNP leader alleged that government is preparing to rig votes and snatch the election results with the help of police and the Election Commission in Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet cities.
Despite the court’s direction not to arrest anyone without warrants in the three cities, Mosharraf alleged that law enforcers have been arresting BNP leaders and activists defying the court order as the government wants to hold Khulna and Gazipur-style polls there.
He warned that their party will take to the streets at the right time to force the government to release Khaleda from jail and hold the next polls under a non-party administration. – UNB
