Khulna, Gazipur polls: Irregularity to invite movement: BNP

Dhaka, Apr 29 – BNP senior leader Abdullah Al Noman on Sunday warned that their party will launch a fresh anti-government movement if the elections to Gazipur and Khulna city corporations are not held in a fair and credible manner.“We’ve already observed that the Election Commission is not playing a neutral and fair role in Gazipur and Khulna. We would like to say we’ll initiate a movement from the two cities if the polls are not held fairly there,” he told a discussion.
Zia Parishad arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail.
Noman, a BNP vice chairman, also alleged that the ‘cadres’ of the ruling party and its associate bodies are destroying the election environment and violating the election code of conduct in Gazipur due to ‘inaction’ by the Election Commission.
He said their party is confident about the victory of its two mayoral candidates in Gazipur and Khulna city polls. “We won the polls in the two cities last time and we’ll also win this time as well if the government doesn’t resort to vote rigging.”
The BNP leader warned that people will not accept the election if the government indulges in irregularities on May 15.
Noman said people are now fed-up with the misrule, corruption and plundering by the government. “Plundering in banks is going on unabated, and most banks are now in a bad shape.”
He urged people to get united to establish a democratic and pro-people government through holding the next general election under a non-party neutral administration. – UNB
