Jeweller Mridul Kumar Chowdhury, who was allegedly picked up by a group of people, introducing themselves as Detective Branch (DB) personnel, from near his Chittagong city residence on February 11, was rescued from Burichong upazila of the district early Monday.
A team of police, led by Sub-inspector Debashis Kumar of Debpur police camp in Burichong, rescued Mridul Kumar from Kongshangar village of the upazila at about 3:45am.Mridul Kumar said that a group of people, numbering 7 to 8, introducing themselves as DB personnel, picked him up at gunpoint from near his Hazari Lane residence in Chittagong city at about 10:30am on February 11 while he was going to his shop.Shimul Kumar Chowdhury, brother of the victim, filed a case with Chittagong Kotwali Police Station on the day.After picking up Mridul, the kidnappers blindfolded him with black ribbon and took him to different places, added the victim.Later they kept him confined to an unidentified place, he said.The miscreants also during the confinement gave him a severe beating with sticks on the night of February 14.They threw him into a roadside paddy field from a microbus in
Pachchimsingh area of the upazila on Monday at about 2:15am.Later from there Mridul managed to reach Kongshangar Bazar and sought help from a night guard named Harn-or-Rashid.Being informed by Mridul’s wife Shelly Chowdhury, whom Harun informed about the whereabouts of her husband, Chittiagong Kotwali thana police made a contact with Burichong police.Later, a team of Debpur police camp rescued Mridul and took him to the camp.
Mridul said he did not find any reason behind his abduction as, he claimed, he had no dispute, either centring land or business, with anyone. -UNB, Comilla
