Left leader, 2 ‘robbers’ killed in gunfights

Dhaka, June 8 – A regional leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in a ‘shootout’ between his cohorts and the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Khaskarra in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district early Thursday.Rab sources said a group of criminals opened fire on a patrol team of Rab while crossing the Khaskarra Bazar, prompting the elite force to fire back around 1:00 am, triggering a gunfight.
After exchange of gunfire for 30 minutes, the Rab members recovered the bullet-hit body of Mohamamd Oltu, 38, son of Jharu Mandal of the village, said Major Monir Ahmed, commanding officer of Jhenidah Rab-6.
The Rab also recovered one shutter gun and four bullets from the spot.
Two Rab members were also injured in the gunfight.
Tariqul Islam, additional superintendent of Chuadanga Police (Sadar Circle), said Oltu was wanted in several cases including murder and extortion.
In another gunfight Two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight between their cohorts and police at Choubaria Haat in Manda upazila of Naogaon district early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Sujon Mia, 42, and Mozammel Haq, 35.
Tipped off, that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of Niamatpur thana and Manda thana police went to the spot, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Niamatpur Police Station.
When the robber’s gang was heading toward Choubaria Haat by a truck, a part of the joint team put a barricade on the road to arrest them, he said.
At one stage, the robbers opened fire to police to avoid the arrest by breaking the barricade, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
Two robbers caught in the line of fire during the gunfight and died on the spot while two others sustained bullet injuries.
Police also arrested two wounded robbers-Imran Hossain and Sohel—from the spot while the others managed to flee the scene, added the OC. – UNB
