A Supreme Court Lawyer on Wednesday sent a legal notice to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia asking her to seek unconditional apology from the nation for raising question about the figures of Liberation War martyrs.SC lawyer Adv Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, also an executive member of Awami League, sent the notice through a registered post.
According to the notice, several newspapers, including Bangladesh Protidin and Amader Somoy, on December 22 carried a report headlined ‘There’s controversy over the number of martyrs: Khaleda’.
Khaleda Zia raised question over the figure of Liberation War martyrs while addressing a rally at the Institute of Engineers in the city, organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal marking the Victory Day on December 21, said the notice.
“Awami League is not a party of freedom fighters. They only speak about freedom fighters. There’s no freedom fighter in Awami League and they have no affection for the country,” Khaelda was quoted as saying in the notice.
Without mentioning anyone’s name Khaleda Zia also said, “He didn’t want independence. He wanted to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” it said.
“Through your words you just raised question about the figure of martyrs who laid down their lives during the Liberation War and distorted the history of Liberation War which is a violation of the constitution and tantamount to sedition,” added the notice.
It also said, “With these remarks it has been proved you (Khaleda) are against independence and patronising those who were against the Liberation War, and such remarks only prove your ignorance about the Liberation War.”
“In this situation, I urge you to withdraw your unconstitutional and arrogant statement, and seek unconditional apology from the nation within seven days of getting the notice. If you don’t do so then civil and criminal cases will be filed against you,” said the notice.
