Dhaka – At least six people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in Sunamganj, Rajbari, Jhenaidah and Cumilla districts on Saturday.In Sunamganj, a farmer and a female student of Islamganj Degree College were killed by lightning strike in Gourararang union of Sadar upazila.
The deceased were identified as Md Ekhlasur Rahman, 45, son of late Abdul Khalek of Vati Safela village and Eka Rani Das, 18, daughter of Radhika Ranjan Das of same village in Gaourirong union of Sadar upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Md Shahidulla said a thunderbolt hit them while the farmer was harvesting paddy and Eka was taking food for her father at Joalvanga haor area around 2 pm, killing the girl on the spot and severely wounding the other.
Later, Ekhlasur succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.In last two weeks at least 16 people were killed in the district, according to the sadar hospital source.
In Rajbari, another farmer was killed in lighting strike while he was returning home from a local market in charmajlishpur village of Ujanchar union in Goalanda in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Khorshed Bepari, 65, son of late Hatem Bepari of Munshipara in Goalanda, said Ujanchar Uion Parishad Chairman Abdul Hossain confirmed the matter.
In Jhenaidah, two people were killed after being struck by lightning in two upazilas of the district on Saturday afternoon.
Carpenter Nirmal Kumar Sharma, 47, son of Madan Kumar Sharma was injured as a thunderbolt hit him when he was going to Mirzapur Bazar in Maheshpur upazila around 3:30 pm and he died on way to the hospital, said Laskar Jayadul Haq, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur Police Station.
Farmer Monowar Hossain, 42, son of Varasa Ali Mondal was killed as a thunderbolt hit him when he was returning home with paddy from field around 3 pm, leaving him dead on the spot, said Shaidul Islam, chairman of Mandiabaria union in Harinakunda upazila
In Cumilla, farmer Rahmat Ali, 45, son of late Akkas Ali, was killed after being struck by lightning while harvesting paddy in the field at Gallai Uttarpara in Chandina upazila on Saturday afternoon.
