Speakers at a meeting yesterday emphasised the need for bringing the climate change issues in the mainstream of the media much more to face their impacts to the people.
Addressing the yearly evaluation meeting of Network on Climate Change, Bangladesh (NCC,B) at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, they said both local and foreign mass media would have to be more active on climate change issues.The speakers further said the government and non-government would have to take coordinated efforts in this regards, otherwise facing harmful impacts of climate change would be tougher.
They placed three-point demands including nominating focal persons on environment and climate change in all media.
Director general of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) Shah Alamgir, general secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Quddus Afrad and journalist Nikhil Bhadra addressed the meeting. Advocacy coordinator of NCC,B Mizanur Rahman Bijoy moderated the function.
Shah Alamgir said the country is vulnerable to climate change but there is lack of responsible role of the media.
He hoped that the media would be proactive in future to prepare more news stories on the risk of disaster and action plan for it. – Staff Reporter
