Man dies in custody, family blames police

A man held in an arms case has died in police custody,bdnews24.com reported on Saturday.
The family of deceased Abdul Alim Rana, 32, alleged police grilled him in custody instead of arranging his treatment.
Dhaka Central Jail Senior Superintendent Jahangir Kabir said the duty doctor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared Rana dead when he was taken to the hospital on Saturday afternoon.

He said Rana was injured when he was brought to the jail on Feb 21.
Mohammadpur Police Station OC Jamal Uddin Mir, citing locals, said Rana and his associates were roaming in Geneva Camp area ‘with intention to commit large-scale crime’.
“People at the camp caught and beat him up before handing him over to the police along with a weapon,” the OC said.
He denied the family’s allegation that Rana was not properly treated.
“He was taken to remand in a case over carrying illegal arms. He was also taken to a hospital for treatment for complications in his kidney,” he said.
Doctors at DMCH said Rana had mutiple wounds on his body. – News Desk
