Maximum use of cultivable land can ensure food security

The nation can attain food security through ensuring maximum utilisation of its cultivable land area adopting the latest technologies and newer cropping patterns to produce more crops despite climate change.

The issue of food security has become the most important issue now in every country throughout the globe as the adverse impacts of the climate change has been posing severe threats to the agriculture, among many other sectors.

Talking to BSS, agriculture and environment experts said there is no alternative to increasing production of food grain in every country for ensuring both national and global peace, stability and harmony through coping with climate change impacts.

Noted rice scientist and Associate Director Agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia and Africa) Dr M A Mazid, Environmentalist and Consultant of IRRI in Bangladesh Dr MG Neogi, Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid, Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sekandar Ali, its Horticulture Specialist Khandker Md Mesbahul islam expressed the views.

Dr Mazid said farmers should be trained and educated enough to cope with the untimely droughts, floods, lack of rains or heavy rains those have been adversely affecting the agriculture sector and hampering food productions.

There is no alternative to ensuring food security through adoption of latest technologies to increase crop yields at reduced costs, save water, facilitate crop intensification, quality seeds and remunerative markets for the produce despite climate change, he said.

Sikander Ali stressed for acquainting the farmers with latest technologies and knowledge of modern agriculture, providing them with necessary facilities, quality seeds and inputs for increasing agri-productions despite climate change impacts. -BSS, Rangpur
