Midterm election could be held in the country through talks if all political parties agree, says opposition leader Rawshan Ershad.
She made this comment while exchanging views with journalists at Media Centre of Jatiya Sangsad in the city.
The opposition leader’s comment came about four and half a months after formation of the 10th Parliament following the January 5 polls.“All political parties should reach an agreement first to hold a midterm election but we have no such environment,” she said.
Regarding the demand of the BNP, the main political rival of the ruling Awami League, for midterm election Rawshan said another election could be held if the people want that. The Jatiya Party will also take part in it she added.
Rawshan, also a senior presidium member of the Jatiya Party, said the people want guarantee of natural death and government should take effective measures in this regard.
JP presidium members—Ziauddin Bablu, Kazi Firoz Rashid, opposition chief whip Tajul Islam Chowdhury and Fakhrul Imam, among others, were present on the occasion.
The opposition leader expressed her concern over the incidents of growing killing, enforced disappearance and terrorist activities.
She hoped that the government would hold fair trial of seven killings in Narayanganj by carrying out proper investigation.
The JP leader mentioned that her party had observed different programme protesting the incidents and said the party would launch continuous movement in necessary to ensure natural deaths of people.
Justifying the participation of JP in the last election which was boycotted by major political parties including the BNP, she said they had no option but to take part in poll to restore peace and continue democratic process in the country.
Replying to a question, she said the BNP had failed to involve people in its movement before the last election.
She demanded the government to improve the law and order situation, reducing unemployment and drug addition from the country.
Rawshan claimed that as opposition her party is playing due role in Parliament and her party is not a domesticated party.
“We will cooperate the government…We did not boycotted Parliament session. We have raised our voice in different public important issues. Theses should be treated as role of a opposition,” she said.
She said we have many things to learn from election held in India. A leader honours another leader but it is absence in Bangladesh, she said. – Staff Reporter
