Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir has doubted the opposition BNP’s
ability to carry out the threat of a nonstop anti-government movement
if the caretaker system was not reinstated to oversee the next general
elections.
“There will be no necessity for us to cope with anything. We don’t
think they have the strength to wage such a so-called war (against the
government),” said Alamgir.
He made the comment after inaugurating on Friday a newly built
government-run primary school at Kachua in Chandpur, his constituency.
The government is constitutionally bound to hold parliamentary
elections between Oct 25 and Jan 24, 2014. Though it will remain in
power, the ruling Awami League will have its regular authority
curtailed during the eection period.
The 15th constitutional amendment has made it possible, for the first
time in Bangladesh, for a party to be in government at the time of
national elections.
The BNP has been opposing the amendment, calling for reinstatement of
the caretaker government system to run the country during the election
period.
It has threatened to enforce vigorous anti-government movement if its
caretaker government demand is not met before the incumbent
government’s tenure expires on Oct 24.
The Home Minister requested people to vote for his party.
“Vote for boat to help the government carry on its development
activities uninterrupted. Give the liars of (BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami)
