Move to build Rampal thermal power plant protested

The district unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) formed a human
chain in the town on Tuesday demanding cancellation of the move to
construct a coal-based thermal power plant in Rampal upazila of
Bagerhat, near the Sundarbans.
More than 100 activists of the district unit of SCF, student wing of
Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), formed the human chain on the
Panchagarh-Dhaka Highway for one hour from 11.00am and then held a
rally there.
Panchagarh district unit SCF leader Sukumar Roy, district unit
coordinator of BSD Prof Tariqul Islam and convener of Nari Mukti
Kendra addressed the rally among others.
Speakers at the rally demanded scraping of the project immediately,
saying the plant is being established to ensure interests of India.
The Bangladesh and Indian governments are jointly implementing the
1320 MW project despite opposition from the local people and
environmentalists fearing a great disaster of the ecology of the
mangrove forest, which UNESCO declared as a world heritage, they
observed. -UNB, Panchagarh
