Renewing its demand to the government to reach a compromise over the polls-time government, opposition BNP on Friday threatened to wage a strong movement after Eid-ul-Fitr if the ruling party sticks to its present stance.“Still, there’s a scope for reaching an understanding over the election-time administration…If the government doesn’t follow the path of negotiation, we’ll come up with harsher action programmes after
Eid and force it to accept our demand,” said senior BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed.
Addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, the former Law Minister also alleged that the government is not willing to hold the next election under a non-party administration for fear of facing
trial for corruption.
Mentioning that there is no alternative to arranging the next polls under a non-party government, the BNP leader said the ruling party will have to face a dire consequence if it tries to hold a lopsided election under its own arrangement.
Youth Forum, a pro-BNP body, organised the discussion, titled ‘The Government’s Plot against the Grameen Bank and Prof Yunus and Future of Our Economy’.
Moudud deplored that the government is maligning Dr Yunus who has brightened the country’s image by winning the Nobel Prize. “We should feel proud of Dr Yunus, but the government is trying to undermine him.
By making such efforts the government belittles us before the whole world.”
Strongly protesting the government’s move to break up the Grameen Bank, Moudud said people will give a befitting reply if the government tries to interfere in the bank’s legal structure.
He alleged that government has declared a war against 84 lakh women of Grameen Bank by taking an initiative to restructure the institution.
“Women won’t let the government implement its evil-design.”
Moudud also said if BNP is voted to power it will restore the Grameen Bank’s structure and give back its all power to its women shareholders. – UNB
