Murder case filed against 9 stampede deaths in Ctg

Dhaka, May 15 – A murder was lodged on Tuesday in connection with the incident of nine women’s death in stampede while collecting zakat and Iftar items in Sathkania upazila of Chattogram district on Monday. Md Islam, husband of deceased Hasina Akhter filed the murder case with Satkania police station where Md Shahjahan, Managing Director of Kabir Steel Re-Rolling Mills Ltd (KSRM) was made prime accused.
Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Satkania police station said that the case was filed under Section 304(A) of CRPC for causing death by negligence.
However, we could not arrest anyone over the incident, said the OC.
On Monday nine women were killed in stampede while collecting zakat and iftar items at Gatiadenga village in Satkania upazila. The zakat distribution programme was organised by Kabir Steel Re-rolling Mills (KSRM) Group without informing the police about it.
Hearing the news of zakat distribution over 35,000 people were gathered at Gatiadenga village though in the placed of the distribution was the capacity of 5,000 people, said police.
Chattogram District Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “We will take action as per law. We have received a case on it.”
However, KSRM authorities demanded they are arranging such programme distribution Zakat and ifter items among poor every year. They have no negligence on it. It’s an accident due to heatstroke.
SRM CEO Meherul Karim said they are bearing the treatment cost of the injured people. The KSRM also helping the victim’s family. We will give Tk. 3 lakh as compensation to the families of each victim and also arrange jobs for a member from each bereaved family.” – Staff Reporter
